Mass Transit Railway

The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) has five lines:

  • Island Line (blue), which runs along the north side of Hong Kong island
  • Tsuen Wan Line (red), which crosses under the harbor from Admiralty on the island and passes through Kowloon on the way to the western New Territories
  • Tung Chun Line (orange), which follows the same line as the Airport Express but makes local stops to Lantau Island
  • Kwun Tong Line (green), which links Kowloon's Yau Ma Tei station to Tiu Keng Leng
  • Tseung Kwun O Extension (purple), which begins on Hong Kong Island, then crosses the harbor and heads northeast to Po Lam in Kowloon.

Air-conditioned, fast, and squeaky clean, MTR is relatively expensive (distance based fares of HKG $4 to $26), and uses stored-value cards which must be read by machines upon entry and exit. Alternatively, the Octopus Card can be used by waving it near the card reader.

MTR trainsets are permanently-linked and open/articulated car-to-car, so that passengers can move from one end of the train to the other without passing through any doors. Some stations have platform-edge doors, and others do not. All signage and announcements are in both Chinese and English, and the system is extremely easy to navigate.
