Metro-North Commuter Railroad was created as the MTA's
operational arm for commuter railroad service in New York State and
Connecticut, assuming control of Conrail's Metroplitan Region's
commuter operations in 1983. Today, Metro-North is one of North
America's premier commuter railroad operations in service and
performance. Operating passenger over three east of Hudson lines and
contracting out service to New Jersey Transit on two west of Hudson
lines, Metro-North is the second largest commuter railroad in the
United States with 60,000,000 passengers (1994) yearly and 339 route
miles of track.
