The National Streetcar Museum at Lowell is an offshoot of Maine's
Seashore Trolley Museum, intended to explore the history and rebirth
of urban rail transportation. The visitors center is located at 25
Shattuck Street, in Lowell, Massachusetts, near the Lowell National
Historical Park Visitors Center.
Lowell, MA had trolley service beginning in 1864, at first horse cars,
then by 1889, electric. By 1935 electric trolley service had been
discontinued in Lowell, but was brought back in 1984 by the National Park
Service. The first streetcars acquired were replicas of Brill Company
cars operated by the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway
Company. These were the first accurate replica trolleys built in the
United States. Perley Thomas car 966 from New Orleans joined the
Lowell operation from Seashore Trolley Museum's collection.
